Fuel Polishing FAQS

What is Fuel Polishing?

Fuel polishing is a cleaning process for Diesel Fuel in which fuel is removed from the tank and filtered back into the tank for a specified time removing contaminates from diesel fuel. This innovative way to remediate fuel is often called the dialysis method due to similarities of removing contaminates from blood by the use of ultrafiltration of fluid across a semi-permeable membrane.

Does Fuel Polishing Work on all fuel?

In most cases fuel polishing works to remove contaminants and water in DIESEL FUEL ONLY. We can provide you with analysis done to ASTM standards illustrating this.

Do you remove the fuel from the tank and filter fuel back in?

Yes, in many cases we do. We have vacuum trucks that are able to remove all the fuel, clean the tank and filter the fuel back in.

What separates DFS from the competition?

Our proprietary approach! Our newly designed equipment is the latest technology in the marketplace today. We have the unique ability to service all tanks and sizes. We have conducted service on tanks as small as 100gallons all the way up to 96,000bbl. For a quote call (888)620-6807.

Can our generator be used while Fuel Polishing?

Yes. Diesel fuel stays in the tank. The only thing removed is the contaminants?

How often should Fuel Polishing be performed?

This depends on the application. Most major oil companies, engine manufacturers, regulatory bodies and the like recommend fuel polishing at least yearly if it was intended for back-up power. In critical facilities such as hospitals it is recommended at least twice annually. In marine applications it is recommended at least once every 2 years. Please call us at (888) 620-6807 and one of our sales associates will be able to help you with the regulations that apply to your facility.

We have a stationary fuel polishing system; do we still need a service?

Yes! Many organizations are under the impression that if they install a fuel polishing system a professional service is not necessary. This is not the case. Although it does help to maintain clean fuel it does not compare to having a service perform the work. It is similar to vacuuming your home every month and thinking that you will not need your carpet professionally cleaned. Furthermore, we have responded to quite a few spills due to these systems since most systems are filtering fuel daily without any supervision.

Should we install a stationary fuel polishing system?

Depends of the tank, fuel and configuration. In many cases stationary fuel polishing systems can do more harm than good by suspending the water in the fuel causing catastrophic failure. We recommend having an on-site evaluation

Can DFS polishing Gasoline?

NO! We do not recommend polishing Gasoline at all. With gasoline’s low flash-point and the ethanol similar to the weight of water, polishing gasoline will cause more of a disadvantage than advantage.

We add additives do we still need to polish our Fuel?

Yes, absolutely. Additives can slow down the aging process of fuel, however, it does not remove contaminates in its entirety.

Does Fuel Polishing Work?

Absolutely! We have the data, ASTM testing, 3rd party testing and numerous other back-up to prove that Fuel Polishing does work.

How do we know that diesel fuel has been remediated through polishing?

We test to ASTM standards on-site before and after with our mobile fuel lab to ensure fuel is fit for its purpose.

How does Drew Fuel Services service the Eastern Seaboard?

We have fuel polishing crews based in New England and South Florida that travel throughout the Eastern Seaboard. A typical crew spends 2 weeks of every month on the road.

How is waste handled in other states?

Drew Fuel Services, holds waste licenses with many states. States that we do not hold licensing, we have partnerships with over 12 reputable companies that are licensed and insured throughout the eastern seaboard. The partnerships established are companies that have zero reportable incidents and are the largest and most respected in their territories.

Are the certain cases where the fuel can’t be polished?

Yes. 1 out of 100 projects we have found that fuel was beyond repair.
